Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual

The phone will be available from tomorrow (20 March 2014) at Sony Center stores, Xperia Flagship stores and major electronic stores across India. Price of this dual SIM phone in India is Rs 25,999.  This phone was recently announced in in India along with the single SIM version Xperia T2 UltraXperia E1 and Xperia E1 dual.

Now let’s take a quick round up of the specifications this device offers.

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual comes with a 6 inch wide display. This can be termed an XL size among smartphone displays. Display is key for a Sony Xperia handset because Sony develops and improves their indigenously developed technology for displays. In this phone Sony uses the Triluminos display and Mobile BRAVIA engine 2 which obviously offers a clear display with 720 p HD resolution. The phone’s display offers 245 ppi pixel density.

Chipset, CPU, Memory and OS

Sony uses  Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400 chipset with Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A7 cpu and Adreno 305. In terms of power output this configuration cannot be termed supreme. The RAM memory is 1 GB which low for a 26 K phone. We will be comparing this with phones in similar price range in the table given at the end of this review. The phone comes with 8 GB of internal memory expandable which can be expanded using a microSD card up to 32 GB. The internal memory also seems to be on the lower side when we look at the price. Sony seems to justify these shortfalls with the extra wide display.

The operating system in this device is Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Sony might offer a Kitkat update roll out for this device. But as of now there is no mention of any OTA updates any where. So the phone is not running the latest version of Android OS.

Camera and Sensors

Sony has included an impressive 13 MP sensor for the phone’s primary rear camera. The front camera has a 1.1 MP sensor. The 13 MP rear camera in this phone can shoot 1080 p full HD videos @ 30 fps second. The front camera captures videos @ 720 p HD movies @ 30 fps. These statistics are impressive. And this is Sony, who else knows camera’s better than they do. Other camera features and modes includes Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, image stabilization, HDR, sweep panorama.

Other sensors found in Xperia T2 Ultra dual includes Accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass.

Network, Connectivity and Data transfer

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra dual supports full 2G network bands on SIM 1 and 3G HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 on SIM 2. The connectivity options in this device includes the regular connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro USB, GPS. Besides these, the phone comes enable with NFC.  There is no 4G LTE which can be a let down for those searching for phones in this price range. The phone offers a data transfer speed of  up to 42 Mbps on HSDPA and up to 5.76 Mbps on HSUPA 3G connections.

The phone comes with an impressive 3000 mAh battery. According to specifications this is enough to power the device for up to 16 hours on 2G and up to 30 hours on 3G. It also offers a stand by of up to 1120 hours on 2G and up to 1093 hours on3G.

Price and Conclusion

The price of Sony Xperia T2 Ultra dual as mentioned above is Rs. 25,999. We feel that the price is on the higher side. But this is a Sony smartphone, known for its uses of high end hardware and so comes with a premium on pricing.  The extra wide 6 inch screen is an advantage. The 13 MP camera and 3000 mAh battery too are impressive. The processor and memory could have been better, although they do offer enough power to run high end games and supports muti-tasking. Device should have supported 4G LTE networks. Now let’s take a look at the specifications of similar devices in this price range including the Moto X that launched today in India.
