Let’s now take a look at the specifications offered by this device. With the given specifications the phone will compete primarily with Xolo Q1010i, Moto G, Lava Iris 504Q+. When more mobiles with identical specifications are available in the market, buyers normally goes for brands they are more loyal to. Previous experiences do matter in the selection process. If someone had a phone from a particular brand and it gave some bad times, it is highly unlikely that he choose same brand next time, no matter how good the phone really is.

In this case we do have a list of phones from different brands that are identical in specifications with Gionee CTRL V5. Those phones are identical in many aspects but have differences too. For example CTRL V5 is the only phone in the list that offers a 4.7 inch display. Others have either smaller or bigger displays, and they offer varied display resolutions too.

Let’s now take a look at the specifications in depth and find out how well Gionee CTRL V5 stand against the competitors.

Gionee CTRL V5 has a typical Android phone design that we see quiet often, a design made popular by Samsung Galaxy phones. The volume rockers and the power key is on the right hand side on the phone, and there is nothing on the left side. With 8.07 mm thickness this phone can be categorized as a thin phone. As I mentioned above, this is an incredible light phone, that weighs just 104 grams including the battery. The overall dimension of this phone ranges between 134.5×67.7×8.07 mm. The side bezels are kept minimal so that the phone won’t feel full in the palms. The 4.7 inch phones are rather comfortable to hold and operate in one hand, not very easy, but possible. Though there is no wow factor associated with the design, it is a winner in terms of weight and thickness against the rest. The design is similar to Moto G, while the Lava and Xolo phones have distinguishable designs.

Gionee CTRL V5 comes with a 4.7 inch display that offers 960 x 540p qHD resolution. The display offers ~234 ppi pixel density and 16M colors. For a 4.7 inch display the 540p qHD resolutions is good enough, but is not the best. The devices that we discuss and compare with in this review offers at least 720p resolution with better pixel density. The size of the display do vary from one device to other. Display fails against most devices in this price range.

CPU, GPU and memory

CTRL V5 is powered by a 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7 quad core processor along with 1 GB of RAM. The chipset in the device is Mediatek MT6582V/X and GPU is Mali-400 MP2. Gionee pioneer p4 too comes with this chipset.  The processor is proven to deliver good performance on  many other previously released phones. The when compare with 1 GB RAM and Mali Graphics offers enough power to play most graphic rich games without lags. Gionee offers 8 GB of internal storage memory in this device. Besides there is microSD card slot for memory expansion. The device supports microSD cards up to 32 GB. Almost all devices in this price range comes with quad core processor and similar memory options. Gionee CTRL V5 is a winner in this category.

The primary camera in Gionee CTRL V5 comes with an 8 MP sensor,  while the  front camera comes with a 2 MP sensor. Though the pixel count doesn’t factor much in the quality of an image shot by a camera, currently we do not have other specifications like lens aperture to determine the quality. More about the camera can only be  known when we get hands on with this device. The camera comes with features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face, smile detection, 4 x digital zoom, auto focus etc. From previous experience we know that Gionee phone cameras shoot good quality images. Even their budget cameras comes with good quality camera. And as you know their their flag ship device Gionee Elife E7 is made to shoot. Gionee CTRL is a winner in this department. Other phones in this price range have similar or slightly better camera in terms of pixel count. But it should be better than the 5 MP camera of Moto G.

Connectivity and OS

The connectivity options are similar to what we are used to see on midrange devices. The regular connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth V4.0, microUSB V 2.0 port and GPS with A-GPS can be found on this device. There is no NFC, which is something you find on high end devices. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is the operating system in the phone. It is quite disappointing as most phones are either upgrading to or comes with Android V 4.4 kitkat. The Moto G which comes at similar price has got latest Android versions and other phones in this price range promises a near future upgrade.

Battery and talk time

CTRL V5 comes with a 1,800 mAh battery that offers up to 324 hours of stand by. It offers talk time of 14 hour and 30 minutes on 2G and up to 10 hours of talk time on 3G. Though the device comes with a smaller battery, the talk time and stand by offered is really impressive. The size and weight of the battery is key to the over all weight of the device. Having managed to offer good battery life on a device 103 gram light really impress. We will compare the battery capacity of this phone with other phones in the chart that can be found at the bottom of this review.

Price and Conclusion

The launch price of the device is 12,999 which is quite impressive for the specifications and features it offers. The price could be slightly lower on online portals. Most impressive factor of this device is its light weight. The hardware specifications and memory options are impressive. The display resolution and OS version could have been better. Gionee might roll out OS update for its devices including this, though there is no immediate signs. But nothing can be done to the display resolution, it remains 540p qHD.
