The Gionee Pioneer P4 is a gradual progression from the previous model Gionee Pioneer P3. Pioneer P3 had won many hearts because of its affordable pricing and a very good camera for the price it sold. In this article we compare the new device Gionee Pioneer P4 with the earlier version as well as with other devices that comes within the same price band.
Gionee has followed the same design pattern that we found on the Pioneer P3 in Pioneer P4. The device looks all same from the exterior, but the primary difference however is evident in its thickness. In Pioneer P4 Gionee has shed a considerable amount of weight and thickness. The device is just 9.05 mm thick and weighs just 128.7 grams. The overall dimensions ranges 135 x 66.5 x 9.05 mm. This is a welcome change, as we can hold the phone in one hand a easily maneuver it to perform tasks with one hand. By today’s standard’s it can be called a slim and light weight device.
Gionee Pioneer P4 has got a 4.5 inch FWVGA display that offers 854 x 480 pixels resolution. Though the company has fractionally improved on the resolution of the display, it does not actually adds to the display quality of the device. The previous version had a 4.3 WVGA display. In the new device Gionee increased the screen size from 4.3 inch to 4.5 inch which is good. But, had they opted for a qHD resolution display it would have been better. However, it is not all that bad to have a FWVGA resolution on a 4.5 inch display. The nearest competitor Xolo Q700S has got the same display resolution and size.
CPU, GPU and Memory
Pioneer P4 is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad core Cortex A7 CPU with Mali-400 MP2 GPU. The chipset used is MediaTek MT6582. Gionee has used the same chipset in this model. In the specifications the name of the chipset is given MT6582V/X, we are not quite sure on what V/X stands for. It probably comes with a GPU with higher clock speed. To improve the performance the company has included a 1 GB of RAM against the 512 MB RAM in Pioneer P3. Better RAM helps in multi-tasking and improves the overall performance of the handset. The internal memory in the device is 8 GB. It can be expanded further 32 GB using a microSD card. Most budget handsets comes with 4GB of internal storage, so here GIonee has a made a leap and is clearly ahead of most devices in this range including the prime competitor Xolo Q700S.
Gionee Pioneer comes with rear and front cameras. The primary camera in the rear comes with a 5 MP sensor, and in the front is a 2 MP camera. Gionee has used the same camera, which is proven good on Pioneer P3. The primary camera can record HD videos @ 30fps. Other camera features includes 4X Digital Zoom, 1X Optical Zoom, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Geo-tagging, touch focus, image stabilization and panorama. The front camera is improved with a 2 MP sensor. The primary camera is testified by many users and reviewers as good. Even though the pixel count is less, the camera captures high quality images.
Connectivity, Sensors and OS
There is not much more in the connectivity front that the other midrange smartphones offers. The device comes with Bluetooth, WiFi, micro USB and GPS with A-GPS along with network connectivity options like 2G and 3G. It supports GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 network bands and WCDMA 900 / 2100 bands. These are same as in the Pioneer P3. Pioneer P4 comes with sensors for accelerometer, proximity and compass. The Android OS V 4.2 Jelly Bean OS in this device, however, is dated. There is not information on whether it can be upgraded to a latest version OS. This can be disappointing for some prospect buyers.
Gionee Pioneer P4 comes with a 1800 mAh battery, which is slightly more powerful than the Pioneer P3 battery. The battery in Pioneer P3 was also good enough with users getting more than 13 hours of net usage on single charge. For Pioneer P4 battery, Gionee offers up to 16.5 hours talk time on 2G and up to 11 hours talk time on 3G. The battery offers a stand by of up to 386 hours.
Price and conclusion
Gionee Pioneer P4 is available for Rs. 9500 on eBay. For the specifications and the features of this device, the price is very impressive. The processor is powerful and RAM is good. The 8 GB internal storage memory is something that other manufacturers don’t offer on their budget handsets. The OS could have been a more recent one and the display with better resolution. These are just suggestions, but the specifications and still great for a budget Android Phone. It will not disappoint you.
