The long-rumored follower of Amazon’s Kindle Fire, in the form of a smartphone finally goes official now. Yes, we are talking about the first smartphone from the e-retailer giant Amazon, the ‘Amazon Fire Phone.‘ We’ve been hearing about Amazon’s plans on a smartphone for years, and finally when it goes official, with its unique features, it seems like that the wait was worth.
The phone is designed to live in Amazon’s existing digital eco-system, and it runs on a forked version of Android, like in their Kindle Fire tablets. Fire Fly and Amazon’s Content and Dynamic Perspective are some of the cool features included in the device, but we will check the specifications of the device first.
The first ever smartphone from Amazon features a 4.7-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution with a pixel density of 315 PPI. The brightness can be adjusted up to 590 nits, which will ensure extreme daylight visibility. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. The powerful processor along with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM will deliver “fast and fluid” interface, according to Amazon. It is coming in either 32GB or 64GB versions.
Amazon has included an impressive 13 MP rear camera with f2.0 wide aperture camera. The camera features 5 element lens, Optical Image stabilization and LED flash support. The phone has a dedicated physical camera button, that gives direct access to the camera app. The front camera is 2.1 MP, and both the cameras will support 1080p video recording.
The phone measures 8.9mm thick and weighs around 160 grams. It packs 2400 mAh battery that will offer 22 hours of talk-time, 11 hours of video playback and 285 hours of stand-by.
In case of connectivity, the phone offers NFC, 4G LTE along with the regular connectivity options like 3G, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, GLONASS etc.
Coming to the software, the phone runs Fire OS 3.5, a forked version of Android OS. Apart from the new software, the company has also introduced a bunch of new features in the device, and the most exciting ones are FireFly and Dynamic Perspective.
FireFly, literally allows the users to detect anything around them. With this new feature, Amazon is focusing to help their users to buy things. The feature can be easily launched with the help of a physical button. It can scan anything around you, like DVDs, TV shows, household items, Barcodes, books and even music.
Once it recognizes, the app will show related products on Amazon, or will fetch the details from wikipedia, IMDB or depending up on the stuff you scanned. According to the company, the FireFly can also detect printed texts, phone numbers, QR codes, web and e-mail address etc. and will let users to save important details for future reference. The FireFly can detect more than 70 million items, and the list will expand in the coming days. More than that the company has also announced an SDK for the developers to enhance their creativity and to come up with new and innovative features in the FireFly.
While the Dynamic Perspective, will change your viewing experience, depending on your perspective. The phone comes with four specially designed depth-sensing cameras and four infrared LED’s that will ensure tilt-based 3D experience. The sensors along with specially designed software, will track the user’s head movement, and shift the perspective of the phone, depending on user’s activity. More than that, the user can also scroll the screen, by just tilting or swelling the phone.
Along with FireFly and Dynamic Perspective, Amazon has also introduced a new feature called MayDay customer support for technical assistance. The phone is getting 24×7 video tech support, and it will connect you to the representative, within 15 seconds. It will work over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G, and the service is absolutely free.
Along with these features, Amazon offers unlimited storage on Amazon Cloud, and users also get access to rich Amazon content. The users can stream the contents like movies, musics on their HDTV with the Fire Phone. Amazon is offering one year access to Amazon prime. The Fire phone is also coming with premium tangle free headphones with remote and mic.
The phone is available now for pre-order from Amazon, and also from AT&T website. The 32GB version of the device will be available for $199, with a new 2 year contract with AT&T, and the 64GB version for $299. Both the device will be available unlocked, for $649 and $749 respectively, and will start shipping from July 25.
