Xiaomi is giving us the hint that a new device is ‘Coming Soon’ to India. This time the company has resorted to publishing a puzzle that needs to be solved by the users to win a priority pass for buying the device. As we solved the puzzle, we came across three keywords — snapdragon, wide angle and expandable. All three of them matches with the Redmi 2. which is the successor of the highly successful Redmi 1S. The company had recently pulled off the Redmi 1S shelf, obviously to make way for the Redmi 2.
So Redmi 2 almost certainly launches on March 12 in India and is expected to go on flash sale from March 17, Tuesday from Flipkart. Like always it will be a flash sale. Expected price of the phone in India is Rs. 6499.
Redmi 2 comes as a gradual progression of the previous model. There is no obvious upgrade that would improve the performance of the device. The processor is upgraded from 1.6 GHz Snapdragon 400 to 1.2 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 chipset which is a 64 bit chipset. 64 bit processors does offer faster data processing especially when it is paired with operating systems that supports 64 bit architecture. Android Lollipop is especially designed to support 64 bit processors. Redmi 2 comes with MIUI 6 built on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat. Xiaomi meanwhile offers sure upgrade to Lollipop OS.
Redmi 2 comes with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage which is expandable up to 64 GB using a microSD card. The device is already in sales in China. The company recently announced that a new version of the Redmi 2 with 2 GB RAM will be available during spring festival in China. The device will also have 16 GB internal storage but will carry a heavier price tag. This enhanced device might not be available in India, at least during the initial launch.
The Redmi 2 comes with a slightly different design which is more like the main stream Android devices. It features more obvious curves on the edges. The display size and resolution is unchanged. Redmi 2 comes with 4.7 inch display that offers 1280 x 720p resolution, which also means a 312 ppi pixel density. The battery is upgraded from 2000 mAh to 2200 mAh. Accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass sensors can be found on the device.
The camera section is almost unchanged in Redmi 2 with a slightly higher resolution 2 MP front camera against the 1.6 MP camera in Redmi 1S. The rear camera comes with an 8 MP sensor and 1.4 µm pixel size.
Redmi 2 is a 4G device. Currently Xiaomi sells Redmi Note 4G in the country for Rs. 9,999. The device will be competing with phones like Lenovo A6000, Yu Yureka and the upcoming New Moto E 2nd Generation 2015 which is expected to launch in India on March 10.
